Lunar Pilot Chronograph Archive Series
New for 2023, the Bulova Lunar Pilot Archive Series Chronograph is now available with a smaller, 43.5mm case.
Sometimes known as “the other moon watch”, the original Bulova Lunar Pilot Chronograph was worn to the moon by Astronaut David Scott. Scott wore the watch on the Apollo 15 mission in 1971. For a fascinating, brilliantly researched article on the original watch, read more here on Worn & Wound.
Bulova’s modern interpretation of the watch has its proprietary NP20 high-performance quartz movement. With a frequency of 262 kHz, it operates at a higher frequency than most quartz or mechanical movements which results in increased precision. Also, it means that the chronograph hand and running seconds hand have the same sweeping motion normally associated with an automatic movement.
Case, Dial & Bracelet
With a 43.5mm stainless steel case, the Bulova Lunar Pilot Archive Series Chronograph is now the same size as the original watch (see 45mm version here). Additionally, true to the original design, the chronograph pushers follow the shape of the case. Finally, engraving on the caseback commemorates the Apollo 15 mission with details of the specific EVA during which Scott wore the original watch. A multi-level dial adds depth. A tachymetre scale around the outside edge is stepped up from the centre of the dial. Moreover, in keeping with the original, the Bulova logo is the version from the 70’s. Finally, the quick-release solid link brushed stainless steel bracelet has a folding clasp with double push button release. The watch also comes with an interchangeable black leather NATO strap.
Bulova and Apollo 15
Founded in 1875 by Joseph Bulova, this famous American brand has a long history of innovation. Indeed, Bulova collaborated with NASA on 46 space missions. Additionally, a Bulova timer was even placed on the sea of tranquility during the first moon walk. The Bulova Lunar Pilot Chronograph commemorates the Apollo 15 mission which was the fourth to land on the moon. Functional and well constructed, it has a fascinating history attached. Finally, a three year warranty guarantees peace of mind.
